Description

Whether one sympathizes with the film's right-wing law-and-order stance or rejects it outright, Don Siegel's film is considered a milestone of the police thriller genre. The film evokes memories of the so-called "Scorpion Killer," a serial killer who terrorized San Francisco and was never caught. At the center of the story is police officer Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood), who is pursuing a serial killer. Frustrated by bureaucratic obstacles, such as civil rights laws and police regulations, Callahan begins to follow his own pathand catches the murderer (Andrew Robinson), who must nevertheless be released immediately because of a procedural error. Like all of Don Siegel's films, including Escape from Alcatraz and The Beguiled, this one is exceptionally taut and straightforwardly directed. Despite all criticism, Dirty Harry is now considered one of the most interesting films of the 1970s, because it reflects more directly than almost any other film the fear Americans felt about the rising street crime of that era. It shows their sense of powerlessness and the resulting frustration. The film's call for "law and order" became a slogan in American politics at the time. Callahan's belief that one should do whatever is necessary to stop crime found its way into reality. Eastwood was apparently not pleased that his character was regarded as a role model by right-wing and conservative forces in particular. In the first of a total of four sequels, he therefore had Harry Callahan take on vigilante justice within his own ranks, which partially softened the message of the first film. The perpetrator, who calls himself "Scorpion," threatens further murders and demands a ransom. Finally, he abducts a 14-year-old girl and buries her alive: $200,000, or the girl will suffocate. Harry is assigned to deliver the ransom. A desperate race against time and a brutal killer begins. Dirty Harry launched Clint Eastwood's successful film series, which was continued with Calahan and The Dead Pool, among others.
